Getting snowed in at a beautiful, rustic mountain chalet doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world, especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a cozy fire, and company to keep you warm. But what happens when that company is eight of your coworkers…and you can’t trust any of them? When an off-site company retreat meant to promote mindfulness and collaboration goes utterly wrong when an avalanche hits, the corporate food chain becomes irrelevant and survival trumps togetherness. One of the facets that makes humans unique is their decision-making processes. Most people believe that they possess the ability to determine if someone is lying. Your initial response might be something similar to “Liars don’t make eye contact.” In a survey of 2,520 adults in sixty-three countries, 70 percent of respondents gave that answer. People also tend to list other allegedly telltale signs of lying, such as fidgeting, nervousness and rambling. But as it turns out, there is no universal “Pinocchio effect,” no single nonverbal cue that will reveal someone to be a liar. But judging a person’s honesty is not about finding a “tell” such as fidgeting or lack of eye contact, but rather about how well our facial expressions, posture, movement, vocal qualities, and speech cooperate. When someone is lying, they are essentially projecting a false emotion or covering a real one. When we do this, our verbal and nonverbal behaviors begin to fall out of line.
