William B. and Emma Austin erected the pictured 20 foot by 40 foot building in 1904 approximately one mile south of Seminole to serve as the area’s first general store. The building also housed the family living quarters, a free hotel, and a post office named Caput. When the town site of Seminole was established, the building was cut into two parts and dragged by mules across a sandy portion of Seminole Draw to its new location across from the courthouse. Once the mercantile was reestablished in Seminole, it also served as a meeting place for various organizations and churches. Mr. and Mrs. Austin became so well recognized for their support and hospitality toward the local settlers and cowboys that she became known as “the Mother of Gaines County”. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Austin for making Gaines County your home and welcoming everyone who walked into your store!

Fern Brookbanks has wasted far too much of her adult life thinking about Will Baxter. She spent just twenty-four hours in her early twenties with the aggravatingly attractive, idealistic artist, a chance encounter that spiraled into a daylong adventure in Toronto. The timing was wrong, but their connection was undeniable: they shared every secret, every dream, and made a pact to meet one year later. Fern showed up. Will didn’t.

It may seem unfair, but the gathering was so large that the Guinness World Record’s judges had to pass when evaluating the attempt of Drumheller, Alberta to gather the world’s biggest crowd of folks dressed as dinosaurs. Town officials said no less than 3,000 participants showed up for the event, but they couldn’t prove it, saying that “we could not obtain an exact measurement to officially break the record.” Notwithstanding the judges’ decision, the numbers attending the Alberta event were obviously so much larger than the 252 people who showed up in costume in Los Angeles in 2019 to win the event.

a surge in book readership in rural areas due to the arrival of the Texas State Lib rary’s new red and white bookmo bile. This t r ave l ing library served Gaines, Dawson, Terry and Yoakum counties with a book circulation of 6,000 plus books that were headquartered in Seagraves at the Hearne freight office. The bookmobile traveled to more than 3 dozen locations and the route was repeated every three weeks. Scheduled stops included churches, grocery & farm stores, community centers, gas stations, cafes, cotton gins, libraries, and courthouses for a 40 - minute to a two - hour visit. The one-year program was developed at the request of the four Commissioner’s Courts to nurture cooperative practices among existing libraries, and emphasize the value of an interlibrary loan system. The Seminole and Seagraves libraries have continued to serve the readers of Gaines County and their summer reading program promises to be an adventure for all ages. Registration begins Tuesday, May 28, 2024…and please visit the museum after spending time at the library this summer.

Refreshing and wry in equal measure, Happy Hour is an intoxicating novel of youth well spent. Isa Epley is all of twenty-one years old, and already wise enough to understand that the purpose of life is the pursuit of pleasure.
