May 22 Democratic Party Runoff Election’s Early Voting Process Underway

May 14, 2018

Democratic party supporters from across the state of Texas will head to the polls early this week ahead of next Tuesday’s runoff off election process.

A process which, locally in Gaines County, includes only one contested race — the Democratic nomination for Texas Governor.

Gaines County Democratic party residents can cast their ballot each business day this week, through 5 p.m. Friday, at the Seagraves Community Building in Seagraves and the City of Seminole’s Ambassador Room.

The Texas Democratic Party’s race for the Governor’s seat includes former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez against businessman Andrew White, the son of late Texas Gov. Mark White.

Ten weeks after the March 6 primaries, early voting began Monday morning today in the May 22 runoffs. In more than 30, state-level primaries across the State of Texas, no candidate drew more than 50-percent of the vote, sparking runoffs between the candidates that came in first and second.

The Democratic race for governor between Valdez and White is the only statewide runoff this year, however, 17 runoffs for the U.S. House and 15 for seats in the Texas Legislature have produced their own political fights around most of the state.

The winner of the Valdez/White runoff will take on Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in the November elections process.

Election day polling will take place on Tuesday, May 22, at four polling locations within Gaines County — the Community Buildings in Seagraves, Loop and Higginbotham, as well as the old Seminole Junior High School Gymnasium in Seminole.

The old SJHS gym is located at the intersection of S.W. 8th St. and S.W. Ave. B in Seminole and is being used as a temporary home for the Seminole election’s sight while the Gaines County Civic Building is being remodeled.

The May 22 runoff election process is open to Gaines County Democrats who participated in the March 6 party primary election process, and those local residents who did not participate in the early March election.

Gaines County residents who participated in the Republican Party primary process this past March are ineligible to participate in the May 22 runoff election, per Texas state election laws.
