Gaines Library Branches Gear Up for Annual Summer Programs

May 25, 2018

It’s time for Gaines County Library System’s Annual Summer Reading Program. Parents can bring their children and teens, from birth through 18 years of age, to register at either library branch in Seminole or Seagraves beginning Tuesday, May 29, when the libraries open. Registration runs through Friday, June 29.

The annual kick-off party will be held in Seminole on Wednesday, June 6, from 9:00 a.m. till noon. This year children of all ages can have fun at the Summer Reading Program Carnival with games and booths! Local peace officers and first responders along with their vehicles will be at the party so the children can meet them and ask questions. The morning’s events will also feature free ice cream courtesy of Rotary International of Seminole.

Teens, youth just completing fifth grade to 18 years of age, can enjoy their own county-wide kick-off party in Seminole on Thursday, June 7 at 3:00 p.m., where they can learn more about the reading program and participate in the 9th Annual Cookie Decorating Contest.

Gaines County’s children and teens will be joining other youth across Texas when they sign up to participate in the 2018 Texas Summer Reading Club at both branches of the Gaines County Library (GCL). The theme for Summer Reading Club is “Libraries Rock!” The program runs from Tuesday, May 29 through Friday, July 13. Both GCL branches are gearing up to bring summer programming and new books written especially for these age-groups of readers.

Both library branches offer the “Read-To-Me” category. Read-To-Me is for children who are too young to read, so any family member can read to the youngsters signed up in this category so they can be a part of the Summer Reading Club and get prizes suited to their age.

Younger readers will need to read 50 books to complete their goals. Older youth readers will log 1,000 pages of reading to finish the program, and teens will read 1,600 pages. As readers reach designated goals in their reading, incentive prizes will be given. Every reader finishing the program will get to choose a new, free book for their own. GCL was awarded a Walmart Foundation Community Grant to purchase these books. Friends of the Gaines County Library System (FoGCLS) is furnishing a pool pass for the Seminole High School pool for everyone who completes their reading goal.

Read-To-Me level readers who complete their reading program, will receive a pass to the City of Seminole’s Splash Pad. FoGCLS will take care of the child’s entrance fee and the City is waiving the $2.00 for one parent fee.

Grand prizes will be given to the youngsters from both library branches who continue reading past the goals in their reading level. Winners of the grand prizes will be drawn and announced at the end of the program.
