Melba Wright, 83

December 28, 2017

After 83 years as a devoted daughter, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and committed community member, Melba Wright, died peacefully at her home in Seminole, December 22nd. Melba Wright came to Seminole in 1963 with her husband Dr. E.M. “Mac” Wright and their two young sons, David and Gary, to build an Optometry practice serving West Texas. Mac and Melba were married for 48 years and the practice thrived through the decades, ultimately adding offices in Denver City and Andrews. Melba served as the business manager for the practice she built with Mac until the day she died. Her greatest pride came from the service, community commitment and life-long connections made through the family’s three-generation old business managed by; her son, Dr. David Wright, grandson, Dr. Lance Wright and granddaughter, Melody Wright Hawthorne.

Melba Wright loved her work in the community and was a working woman long before it was the norm. She was a long-time member and president of the Seminole Business and Professional Women’s Club, was active in the Texas Optometric Association Auxiliary and taught Sunday school at the First Baptist Church of Seminole for nearly 40 years. From Sunday night adult fellowships to feeding generations of hungry teenagers, Melba’s kitchen counter is familiar to many Seminole natives. Her “no nonsense” approach to life built deep and lasting friendships and has left a legacy of many “Melba-isms” her family cherishes, such as; “You’ve got the same clothes to get glad in you got mad in.” As an organ donor, Melba will continue to contribute to others in death as she did throughout her life.

She will be especially missed by her survivors, including: her sons, David, Gary and their wives Sheryl and Kim; her grandchildren, Lacy and David Adkins, Dr. Lance and Amanda Wright, Danielle Wright, Melody & Matt Hawthorne, Mackenzie Wright and Taylor Wright; and her six great-grandchildren, Ryan (18), Dawson (9) and Dylan (6) Adkins and Logan (6), Joshua (4) and Elizabeth (2) Wright.

The memorial service for Melba Wright will celebrate a life well-lived at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Seminole.

Memorial gifts are being accepted by the Dr. E.M. (Mac) and Melba Wright Scholarship Endowment at the University of Houston College of Optometry. The website is For more than a decade, this endowment has provided scholarships to students committed to becoming Optometrists in rural underserved areas.
