Gaines Commissioners Approve 106th Indigent Defense Contract for FY 2017

Gaines County’s portion of the 2017 fiscal year indigent defense contract for the 106th Judicial District grew by just over 10-percent from the year prior, leaving the county as the largest payer of the contract among the four-county district.

Gaines County, according to information provided to the Seminole Sentinel on Monday morning, will pay $25,455 of the $75,000 indigent defense contract for the FY 2017, following a unanimous vote of the Gaines County Commissioners Court on the action held Monday morning at the Gaines County Courthouse.…

American flight makes unplanned Lubbock stop due to disruption

DALLAS (AP) — A passenger was removed from an American Airlines flight to Dallas after causing a disruption that led pilots to make an unplanned stop in Lubbock.

The airline said other passengers helped flight attendants restrain the man during the redeye flight Thursday morning from Ontario, California.

Airport and law enforcement officials said that 24-year-old Jerry Ba Nguyen, of San Jose, California, was taken to a local hospital and then to the Lubbock County jail and charged with making terror threats.…

SEDC Board to Consider Business Recruitment Firm Contract Extension

Board directors with the Seminole Economic Development Corp. will consider whether or not to renew an agreement with an Austin-based retail recruitment firm for the continued advocating of business opportunities in the Seminole community, in their  upcoming Monday afternoon meeting.

US rig count up 5 last week to 511

HOUSTON (AP) — The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. increased by five last week to 511.

A year ago, 838 rigs were active. Depressed energy prices have sharply curtailed oil and gas exploration.

Houston oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. said Friday that 418 rigs sought oil and 92 explored for natural gas this week.…

Satellite-based radar confirms man-made Texas earthquakes

WASHINGTON (AP) — Scientists used radar from satellites to show that five Texas earthquakes, one reaching magnitude 4.8, were caused by injections of wastewater in drilling for oil and gas.

In 2012 and 2013, earthquakes — five of them considered significant — shook East Texas near Timpson. A team of scientists for the first time were able to track the uplifting ground movements in the earthquake using radar from satellites.…
